Recently, a young lady asked me if the "glass ceiling" still exists?
Of course, she was referring to the notion that a talented minority would be denied access to the top of the corporate ladder due to some form of discrimination.
"For what I'm told," I began, "it still does."
It was clear from the look on her face that my response baffled her. But it was the only way that I could answer. After all, I hadn't worked in "Corporate America" in 14 years. So, I knew that some explaining was in order.
"I want to share an interesting statistic with you," I said. "According to the latest census data available, the number of Black-owned businesses have grown four times faster than
that of any other group?"
At this point, she was more confused than ever.
"You see, the best way to break the 'glass ceiling', my friend, is to own it! Then you can break it, melt it down and wear it as jewelry."
She smiled and uttered the most heartwarming words: "I think you just changed my life."
Well, my goal is to change yours too. So, get out your hammer and let's break some glass!
